Kinja'd!!!

Went to cars and coffee on Sunday, same as every first Sunday of the month. Probably 400+ cars there, everything from McLarens and Ferraris to ratty old Subarus. Of course there was the guy who always shows up with his Alfa 4C, parks in the middle of 2 spots and plants his sign in front, and his lawn chair next to it while in the next row there are a couple of 488s and McLarens just parked in normal spaces while the owners walk around.

There were a handful of people with the signs in front of their cars like shown above. Obviously the image was found on the internet, not taken at C&C by me. I don’t get these signs. Especially on a stock car. Usually it’s some old muscle car or something, so I guess it’s a age thing, and my nearly 42 years places me outside of that demographic. Old muscle cars and 57 Ch evys aren’t really my thing, I’d much rather see some a 70s Town and Co untry wagon , or early 80s Civic (both were in attendance and very cool) than 1 of 30 ‘68 Mustangs present at C&C.

Dunno, I guess I just don’t see the point. Your car is special to you, I get that, mine is special to me too. I just don’t imagine that mine is special enough for anyone else to want to sit there and read a sign about how awesome it is.

if you did a bunch of mods to it, I would get it. But normally they have not. Just need to add the creepy crying child doll and it will be complete...

Absolutely. Perhaps it’s the historian in me, or the fact that those are the cars that I grew up with. My first ride was an 82 Rabbit. And I’ve got a soft spot for the Hondas of that era.

I just don’t imagine that mine is special enough for anyone else to want to sit there and read a sign about how awesome it is.

It’s sort of like those car forums where people put their car’s resumé in their signature, or the trumpet players who close their emails with the make and model of the trumpets they play. I get it, you’re proud, but really, I’m just not interested.

I don't get it when they go into the "1 of 4423 with option code XYZ" combos and finally come to some inane conclusion that because there is only 6 other cars exactly like it, theirs is super ultra rare and you should REVERE IT because they bought it.

I personally like when the owners have history behind the car and display it like that. Now the Corvette thing, not as cool.

I remember seeing at Cars & Coffee once an old   Benz where the owner had the build sheet and a ton of old photographs from the original owners when they’d road trip their car.

Parallel to this: wooden boat dudes are the same way. You ask one question about the boat and you get its life story, and that of the owner. This is actually how I met my father-in-law and then my wife. He has a ‘56 Shepherd, a pretty rare wooden boat, and I asked him about a detail on it one time. To which he replied with a simple answer, then a question for me - you know, like a real conversation. I warmed up to him and made friends; then one day he brought his daughter with him in the boat. The rest, as they say, is history.

The guy who bought my Galant VR-4 takes it to shoes and he made a sign for it. That kinda makes sense tho since most people will look at it and wonder what’s so special about an old Sentra.

Totally agree on something unusual like that. I forget what it was, but last year there was something really unusual that a guy rescued from rotting away in a field. He had all the pics and restoration info in his trunk. Really interesting to see.

Lol, that’s the kind of car I’ m most interested in. My wife doesn’t get it when I point them out, my kid wants to hear all about the unicorns.

I haven’t been to a car show in a while. An over the top sign doesn’t make sense to me but I like when people have some information.

My sense is that probably 1/2 of the people with similar cars go around asking other people with similar cars what they’ve done to it so these signs started as a way to get right to the chase.

Don’t fight it. We should all make these for every car we drive, then display them in the dashboard everywhere we go.

2015 Honda Odyssey EX-L with Rear Entertainment System (1 of 127,736)

Engine mods: K&N filter

Body mods: Hole in rear bumper

Audio: OEM head unit periodically turns self up to full volume

Then about 20 mediocre pictures collaged around the outside.

2018 Subaru Outback Limited
Exact same silver as 90% of the rest
Screaming 2.5L BOXER coupled to a CVT with PADDLE SHIFTERS!
0-60 eventually
Shitty nav because the dealer gave me a great deal
8" color TOUCHSCREEN that freezes for no reason
Symmetrical All Wheel Drive

I’d definitely get some interested parties.

I’ve heard that’s a thing, but I think I’ve only seen it a few times. But Subies are rare-ish around here and, believe it or not, almost all Outbacks are in some shade of brown/beige or green ...very rarely silver.

Screaming yellow is a Ford color.

How can you make a damn sign about how good your car is and get the color wrong?

You need to stand around the Alfa and loudly ask “why does this car rate two spots when the COOL cars only get one????” - and preferably have others repeat it.

On the signs, I appreciate it when there’s a bit of a story, or it gives a bit of a description as to what the car is, especially if it’s unusual . The “1 of XX” is grossly overplayed though - I am into old muscle cars, preferably stock, myself, but the “1 of XX” STOPS once you get past any obvious performance options (engine, trans, intake, ram air setup is about it). IDGAF how many cars were made with the purple/orange/puce tri-tone - GTFO with that shit.

And the real kicker is when the “1 of XX” factors in UNDESIRABLE options - nice 427 Corvette, but the reason why only 25 were built with a Powerglide is because that’s a TERRIBLE THING, SO SHUT THE F*** UP!!

when every person that walks past your car asks you “what engine does it have?, what is the name of that yellow?” you just want to slow down some of the questions........

I kind of enjoy reading the signs. It gives you better insight on why that person loves their car, or at least what they think makes it special. I have nothing but contempt for somebody that prints out the entire wikipedia article and doesn’t at least highlight something.

I think some car shows are rediculous when they try and cram in a car in every spot when they know people are going to be walking between them, but 2 spots for something (there are exceptions) is extreme. I’m indifferent to the signs, but I still see these creepy dolls

I just want to be in the presence of a 959. I saw one once at the Porsche museum in Stuttgart back in the late 90s, I want to see one again. Where was this?

“time out dolls” or doll of kids trying to look into the engine, but in either case major creep factor.
